The San Roque neighborhood got its name in 1769 when Governor Portola's soldiers camped at the mouth of a creek, which they named after the patron saint of invalids. Most San Roque homes were built after the 1925 earthquake, and the area enjoys many diverse styles of architecture. There are two large shopping centers nearby, as well as many other smaller stores. Its excellent schools make San Roque one of Santa Barbara's most desirable neighborhoods.
